An adjective describes a noun -- which one, what kind, how many, what it is like. English puts them in two positions: attributive, sitting in front of the noun (a *brittle* wire), and predicative, sitting after a linking verb (the wire is *brittle*). A few only ever work in one of the two, which is why "the asleep child" sounds wrong while "the child is asleep" does not. Most gradable adjectives take comparative and superlative forms, by suffix for short words (bright, brighter, brightest) and by more/most for longer ones. English also has a strong and almost entirely unwritten rule about the order of stacked adjectives -- opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose -- which is why "a lovely little old rectangular green French silver whittling knife" reads naturally and any other order does not. Native speakers follow it without being able to state it.

Colour words are, since they are ordinary descriptive adjectives. Numbers and determiners (three, several, this, my) are not -- they modify nouns but behave grammatically like a separate class, and as prompts they are dead ends.
The list holds base forms only -- "brittle", not "brittler" or "brittlest". Base forms are what you build the other two from, and most of these adjectives take more/most rather than a suffix anyway.
