An art movement is a group of artists working at roughly the same time who share an approach, a set of ideas, or an enemy. Some named themselves, with manifestos and journals -- the Futurists and Surrealists were unusually organised. Most were named later by critics, often as an insult that stuck: Impressionism, Fauvism, and Baroque all began as mockery. Movements matter because art is largely an argument between generations, and knowing what a movement was pushing back against explains what it made.
This generator draws from 110 art movements across six periods -- Before 1800, The 19th Century, Modernism, Post-War & Contemporary, Digital & Now, and Regional & Folk Traditions. Each result gives the dates, the artists most associated with it, and the one idea that defines it, from Impressionism's fight with the Salon to Superflat's collapse of high and low culture.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Prepare for a gallery visit, find a style to work in for a drawing challenge, revise for an art history exam, or fill the gaps between the four or five movements everyone can name. The Regional & Folk filter is the one to press if the standard European narrative is starting to feel narrow.
Generate draws one movement at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the movement currently shown in single-result mode. Each draw carries dates, key figures, and the defining idea, and the Period filter narrows the century.

Broadly: Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, then the modernist explosion -- Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Dada, Surrealism -- followed by Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art.
Fauvism lasted around three years as a coherent group. Vorticism, the British answer to Futurism, effectively ended when the First World War killed or scattered its members after two.
There is no consensus, which is itself characteristic. Post-internet art, relational aesthetics, and various digital and AI-adjacent practices all have claims, but movements are usually named in hindsight.
