Emoji are pictographic characters encoded in Unicode, which is what lets them travel between devices as text rather than images -- the name is Japanese, from e for picture and moji for character, and has nothing to do with emotion. They originated on Japanese mobile networks in the late 1990s and entered Unicode in 2010, after which they spread globally. Because each platform draws its own glyphs from the same code point, the same emoji can look meaningfully different on different phones, which has caused genuine misunderstandings.
