Random Extinct Job Generator

Generate a random extinct occupation from 100 vanished jobs -- each with what the work involved and what killed it off.

About this generator

This generator draws from 100 occupations that no longer exist, across Street & City, Industry & Craft, Household & Service, Science, Medicine & Numbers, and Entertainment & Odd. Each explains the actual daily work and the technology or law that ended it -- the knocker-upper undone by alarm clocks, the human computer replaced by the electronic one.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Research a historical novel or period drama, prep a history lesson on technological change, find your next 'jobs that no longer exist' rabbit hole, or put your own job in perspective. Several here paid well precisely because nobody else wanted them.

How it works

Generate draws one occupation at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the job currently shown in single-result mode. Every draw describes the work and its ending, and the Sector filter narrows the world it belonged to.

Common questions

What was a knocker-upper?

Someone paid to wake factory workers by tapping their bedroom windows with a long pole, before cheap alarm clocks existed. The obvious question -- who woke the knocker-upper -- was a running joke at the time.

What was the worst job in history?

Strong contenders here: the pure finder collecting dog faeces for tanneries, the gong farmer emptying cesspits at night, and the fuller who trampled cloth in stale urine. The gong farmer was at least well paid.

Which jobs are disappearing now?

Switchboard operators and typesetters went within living memory; travel agents, bank tellers, and print journalists have thinned dramatically. Every entry on this list once looked permanent too.
