Random Famous Painting Generator

Generate a random famous painting from 86 masterpieces across six movements, each with artist, year, and why it matters -- art history one draw at a time.

About this generator

This generator draws from 86 famous paintings across six movements -- Renaissance & Baroque, Romanticism & Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Modern & Expressionist, and Postwar & Contemporary -- each with its artist, year, and one line on why it matters, from the Mona Lisa to Basquiat.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Take an art-history survey one random masterpiece at a time, pick a daily painting to actually look up and study, or seed drawing practice, trivia rounds, and museum scavenger hunts. The movement filter turns it into a guided tour of any single era.

How it works

Generate draws one painting at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the work currently on the easel in single-result mode. Every draw names the artist and year and says why the painting earned its fame, and the Movement filter walks the timeline era by era.

Common questions

How do I use this to actually learn art history?

Draw one painting a day, search the image, and spend two minutes with it alongside the description. The movement filter adds structure: a week of Impressionism, then a week of what came after, and the timeline builds itself.

Why isn't the painting's image shown?

Most of these works sit under museum image rights, so the generator gives you the name, artist, year, and story -- everything needed to find a high-resolution image from the holding museum in one search.

What's the span of the list?

About five and a half centuries -- from van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait in 1434 to Banksy's self-shredding Girl with Balloon -- across Europe, the Americas, and Japan.
