Random Film Director Generator

Generate a random film director from 193 across five movements -- the studio system to the present day -- each with the film or method they're known for.

What is auteur theory?

The argument, made by a group of young French critics writing for Cahiers du cinéma in the 1950s, that the director is the author of a film in the way a novelist is the author of a book -- and that you can therefore read a body of work for a consistent personality across it. It was a deliberately provocative claim in a period when films were understood as studio products, and its first targets were American: Truffaut, Godard, Rohmer, Rivette and Chabrol championed Hitchcock, Hawks and Nicholas Ray as artists at a time when American critics regarded them as competent entertainers. Then they went and made films themselves, which is why the French New Wave is the only critical movement to have become a filmmaking one. The theory has been argued with ever since -- film is the most collaborative art there is, and a Hitchcock film without Bernard Herrmann or Edith Head is a different film -- but it is still the frame almost everyone uses to talk about cinema.

About this generator

This generator draws from 193 directors grouped by movement rather than by nationality or decade: the studio system, the post-war European auteurs, the Americans who took the studios apart in the late 1960s, the great non-Western traditions, and the people working now. Each result carries the film, the record or the working method that director is known for.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Building a watchlist, film-studies revision, quiz writing, choosing a director to work through chronologically, and settling arguments about who belongs in the canon.

How it works

Generate draws one director at random from 193 using cryptographically secure randomness, and never repeats what is on screen. Filter by movement to stay inside one tradition, or draw a batch with No Duplicates on to build a season of viewing in a single press.

Common questions

How are directors grouped?

By movement: Classical Hollywood, European Auteurs, New Hollywood, World Cinema and Contemporary. Someone who belongs to two is filed under the one they are most written about in, which is why Fritz Lang sits with Classical Hollywood despite Metropolis and M being German.

Is it weighted towards American cinema?

Two of the five groups are American and three are not, so no. World Cinema alone covers Japan, India, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Iran, Turkey, Senegal, Egypt, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Thailand.

Can I use it to pick something to watch?

That is its most common use. Draw a director, read the line, and start with whatever it names. Filtering to one movement first turns it into a way of working through a tradition rather than jumping between them.

Are documentary and animation directors included?

Animation yes -- Miyazaki and Takahata are both here. Documentary is largely not, because the field is big enough to deserve a list of its own rather than a handful of token entries in this one.
