A unit is an agreed quantity that a measurement is expressed as a multiple of, so a length of five metres means five times a defined standard. Since 2019 all seven SI base units are defined from physical constants rather than objects -- the kilogram now derives from the Planck constant, retiring the platinum-iridium cylinder held near Paris since 1889. Everything else is derived from those seven, so a newton is just kilogram-metres per second squared. Unit confusion still has consequences: the Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 because one team worked in pound-force seconds and another in newton-seconds.
