Generate a random musical instrument, from orchestral strings to electronic and experimental gear, for a practice challenge, a lesson plan, or discovering something new to learn.
The standard scheme is Hornbostel-Sachs, published in 1914, which sorts instruments by what actually vibrates to make the sound. That gives five families: idiophones where the body itself rings, membranophones with a stretched skin, chordophones with strings, aerophones with a vibrating air column, and electrophones generating sound electrically. It cuts differently from the orchestral families, which is why a saxophone is a woodwind despite being brass -- the reed makes the sound, not the metal. Pitch comes down to physics in every case: shorter, tighter and lighter vibrating elements produce higher notes.
This generator draws from 200 real musical instruments across eight categories -- Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Keyboard, Electronic, World & Folk, and Unusual & Experimental -- from orchestral standards to genuinely strange ones, each with a description of how it's played.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Musicians use it to pick their next instrument to learn or research. Teachers use it for a music-class prompt, and composers use it to force some variety into an arrangement by including an instrument they wouldn't normally reach for.
Generate draws one instrument at random from the full 200-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each result comes with a short description of how it's played.
A sample of what this generator can draw, spread evenly across the full list:
Yes -- all 200 are real instruments, from common ones to genuinely obscure ones.
Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the eight categories. Generate will then only draw from instruments in the categories you've selected.
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
Yes -- Unusual & Experimental is one of the eight categories.
