Random Paper Type Generator

Generate a random type of paper, from everyday copy paper to watercolor stock and specialty sheets. Filter by category for crafts, printing, or learning something new.

How is paper classified?

Paper is graded by weight, finish and fibre content, and the weight systems differ by region -- grams per square metre almost everywhere, and pounds per ream in the United States, where the ream's base size varies by paper type and makes direct comparison awkward. Finish runs from uncoated, which absorbs ink and reads matte, to coated gloss that holds fine detail for photographs. Fibre determines longevity: papers made from cotton or with an alkaline buffer resist the acid yellowing that destroys cheap wood-pulp stock. Standard sizes split the same way, with the ISO A series built so that halving any sheet gives the next size down at the same proportions.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 32 paper types across four categories -- Everyday & Office, Art & Craft, Printing & Photo, and Specialty -- from copy paper and cardstock to vellum, washi, and cotton rag, each with a description of its weight, feel, and best use.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Crafters and stationery lovers use it to explore papers beyond the printer tray. Artists use it to match paper to medium -- watercolor demands different stock than charcoal -- and print buyers use the descriptions to speak the shop's language.

How it works

Generate draws one paper type at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Each single result describes the paper's properties and purpose, and the Category filter narrows the pool.

Common questions

Do the descriptions cover paper weights?

Yes -- where weight defines the paper (cardstock, text stock, watercolor's 300gsm standard) the descriptions give the numbers and what they mean in hand.

What's the difference between vellum and parchment?

Historically both were animal skin; today's craft 'vellum' is translucent plant-based paper and 'parchment' a mottled decorative stock -- the descriptions untangle the modern from the medieval.

Who is this generator actually for?

Anyone who touches paper on purpose -- crafters, artists, printmakers, zine makers, wedding planners choosing invitations, and the pleasantly niche community of paper enthusiasts.
