The first generation, released for the Game Boy in 1996, contained 151 creatures, a number that includes Mew -- added late by a programmer using leftover memory and originally unobtainable in normal play. The designs were built around a collect-and-trade loop, which is why the games shipped in two versions with different exclusives that could only be completed by linking with another player. Type matchups form a rock-paper-scissors lattice of strengths and weaknesses, which is the strategic core beneath the collecting. Later generations have pushed the total past 1,000, but the original 151 remain the most recognised set by a wide margin.
This generator draws from all 151 original Pokémon of Generation I, filterable by type across fifteen types from Normal to Dragon -- each with a description of the creature, drawn from the Kanto region roster that started it all.
