Random Space Mission Generator

Generate a random space mission, from historic crewed firsts to robotic probes and rovers, for a lesson, a story, or a bit of spaceflight trivia.

What is a space mission?

A space mission is a single funded programme to send a spacecraft, crewed or not, to a defined destination with defined scientific goals. Mission types divide by how close they get: flybys pass once, orbiters take up station for years, landers touch down, rovers drive, and sample-return missions bring material home. Timing is dictated by orbital mechanics rather than readiness, so launch windows to Mars open roughly every 26 months and missing one costs years. Many outlive their planned lifetimes by an order of magnitude -- the Opportunity rover was designed for 90 days and lasted nearly fifteen years.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of real space missions across five categories -- Crewed Missions, Robotic Probes & Landers, Rovers, Satellites & Observatories, and Space Stations -- spanning the earliest days of the Space Age through today's Mars rovers and orbiting observatories.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Teachers and students use it to spark a lesson or a report topic on spaceflight history. Writers and game designers use it to name a spacecraft, a mission arc, or a sci-fi setting's backstory. It's also a quick way to rediscover a mission you'd forgotten, or to settle on a space-themed name for a project, pet, or team.

How it works

Generate draws one space mission at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the mission alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real space missions, or made up?

Every mission in the pool is real, including the descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of mission, like only Rovers?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the five categories. Generate will then only draw from missions in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same mission twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it cover missions from space agencies outside NASA?

Yes -- alongside NASA missions, the pool includes Soviet and Russian, European, Chinese, and Indian missions, from Sputnik 1 to Chang'e 4 and Mangalyaan.
