Random Writing Prompt Generator
Generate a random writing prompt to spark a story, from sci-fi and fantasy to mystery, horror, and romance -- for beating writer's block or daily practice.
About this generator
This generator draws from 84 open-ended story starters across seven genres -- Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Mystery & Thriller, Horror, Romance, Literary & General, and Historical. Each prompt is a premise, not a plot, meant to spark a scene, short story, or novel.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
What people use it for
Writers use it to beat writer's block, warm up before a session, or find a seed for a new project. Teachers use it for creative-writing exercises, and it's great for daily writing practice or a story-a-day challenge.
How it works
Generate draws one prompt at random from the pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by genre narrows the pool before drawing.

Common questions
Can I filter by genre?
Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the seven genres. Generate will then only draw from prompts in the genres you've selected.
Are these full plots?
No -- each is an open-ended premise meant as a jumping-off point. Where the story goes is up to you.
Will it show me the same prompt twice in a row?
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
Can I generate several at once?
Yes -- use the amount control to draw a batch of prompts to browse or combine.
