Draw a random alien civilization -- how they're ruled, how advanced they are, what they believe, how they fight and how they treat outsiders.
This generator draws from 102 ways a civilization can be organised, across seven axes: who holds power, technology level, economy, belief, war and expansion, attitude to outsiders, and decline. Each is written as a situation with tension already in it rather than a neutral label, because 'Late Imperial Decay' is a story and 'monarchy' is not.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Game masters use it to make a faction the party can negotiate with, fight or fail to understand. Worldbuilders draw several to cover different axes of the same society -- one for governance, one for tech, one for contact stance -- and get something with genuine internal contradictions.
Generate draws one civilization trait at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filter to a single axis, or raise the amount to draw one from several axes at once.
A sample of what this generator can draw, spread evenly across the full list:
Draw several at once with the amount control, or draw once per category using the filter. Three or four axes -- rule, technology, belief, contact -- is usually enough to make a civilization feel real.
Both. Most describe structures that human history has produced somewhere, which is deliberate -- recognisable politics with an unfamiliar biology attached is far more usable than pure strangeness.
Yes. Very little of it depends on spaceflight, and the Rule & Power, Belief & Culture and War & Expansion categories transfer to any setting.
The Random Alien World preset stacks it with world type, biome, species and hazard, so the civilization arrives attached to a specific planet and a specific people.
