Random Alien Species Generator

Draw a random alien species -- insectoid hives, silicon lattices, fungal networks and machine successors -- each described by how it actually works.

About this generator

This generator draws from 114 kinds of alien across nine groups, described by body plan, biology and the social consequences of both, rather than by an invented name. A result like 'Silk-Weaving Architects' or 'Uploaded Ancestors' tells you what they're built from and how that shapes them, which is the part that's actually hard to invent on the spot.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Game masters and science fiction writers use it to get past the rubber-forehead default -- the categories deliberately push well beyond humanoids into fungal, mineral, gaseous and collective life. It's also useful as a prompt for concept artists, and it's the inhabitants block of the Random Alien World preset.

How it works

Generate draws one species at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filter by biology if your setting needs something specific -- only synthetics, say, or nothing humanoid.

Common questions

Why are there no species names like 'Zorblaxians'?

Because a name tells you nothing. These are described by what they are, so you can name them yourself in whatever language your setting uses -- and the description is the part that makes them usable.

Can I avoid humanoid aliens entirely?

Yes -- deselect Humanoid & Near-Human in the filter. That leaves eight categories covering insectoid, aquatic, reptilian, avian, plant, mineral, synthetic and collective life.

Are these scientifically plausible?

Some more than others. Silicon-based life, hive minds and extremophiles metabolising radiation are all seriously discussed; coherent light beings and quantum-state entities are firmly fiction. The categories make it easy to stay on whichever side you want.

How do I place a species somewhere?

The Random Alien World preset stacks this with a world type, a biome, a civilization and a hazard, so the species arrives with somewhere to live.
