Random Ancient Site Generator

Draw a random archaeological wonder from 50 across the world -- Giza to Machu Picchu -- each with its location and the story of its discovery. Filter by region.

What is an archaeological site?

An archaeological site is any place holding physical evidence of past human activity, from a monumental complex to a scatter of worked flint. Their information is in the stratigraphy -- deeper layers are older -- so excavation destroys the record as it reads it, and modern practice leaves much of a site untouched for future methods. Dating combines stratigraphy with radiocarbon for organic material and other radiometric techniques for older deposits. UNESCO's World Heritage list now runs past 1,200 entries, though inscription brings visitor pressure as well as protection.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 50 archaeological wonders across five regions -- Egypt & Africa, Middle East, Asia & Pacific, Europe & Mediterranean, and The Americas -- from the Pyramids of Giza and Göbekli Tepe to Machu Picchu and the Terracotta Army, each located and described.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Travelers use it to build ancient-wonder bucket lists beyond the famous five. History and archaeology fans use it as a virtual tour, teachers use it for research prompts, and writers and game designers mine real sites for fictional ruins with authentic detail.

How it works

Generate draws one site at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Each single result shows the site's modern country beneath its name plus a short story of what it is and how it was found; the Region filter narrows the pool.

Common questions

What counts as an 'ancient site' here?

Archaeological and monumental places built before roughly the early modern era -- from Göbekli Tepe's 11,500-year-old stone circles to medieval marvels like Angkor Wat and Great Zimbabwe.

Does it include sites outside the usual tourist canon?

Deliberately -- alongside Giza and Pompeii you'll draw Meroë's pyramids, Nan Madol's basalt islets, Cahokia's great mound, and Caral, the oldest city in the Americas.

Can I visit these places?

Most are open to visitors and many are UNESCO World Heritage sites, though a few -- like Lascaux's original cave -- are closed for preservation with replicas nearby. The descriptions note the notable cases.
