A primary source is a document created at the time being studied by someone connected to it: a charter, a treaty, a letter, a court record. Historians rank it above secondary accounts written later, but not because it is neutral -- every document was written by someone with a purpose, and reading it means asking who wrote it, for whom, and what they wanted. Survival is heavily skewed towards the literate and powerful, so peasants and slaves appear mostly through the records of others. The most consequential documents are often the plainest in form, since a land grant or a tax roll can outweigh a chronicle written to flatter.
This generator draws from a curated list of 42 landmark documents across six kinds -- Ancient & Classical, Medieval, Founding Charters, Treaties & Accords, Books & Manifestos, and Speeches & Proclamations -- from the Code of Hammurabi and the Rosetta Stone to the UN Charter and 'I Have a Dream.'
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
