Generate a random animal, from mammals and birds to fish, reptiles, and amphibians -- great for games, writing prompts, or just satisfying curiosity.
This generator draws from a curated list of 543 real animal species spanning nine taxonomic classes -- mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and more. Each entry comes with its native region and real-world conservation status, and threatened species also show an estimated remaining wild population, so a single roll doubles as a small fact about the animal it lands on.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Teachers and students use it to pull a random species for a biology worksheet or a quick zoology trivia round. Writers and game designers use it to seed a character, creature, or setting when they want a starting point instead of a blank page. It also works as a party or classroom icebreaker ("guess the animal" from its region and status alone), a random pick for a mascot or team name, and a low-key way to stumble across an endangered species you'd never have looked up on your own.
Hitting Generate draws one entry at random from the full 543-species pool using the same cryptographically secure randomness (crypto.getRandomValues) as the rest of the site, and in single-result mode it's guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing. Filtering by class narrows the pool to just that group before drawing. Asking for more than one result at once draws without duplicates until the (filtered) pool is exhausted, then reshuffles and continues -- so a request for more results than exist in a narrow filter still returns a full list, just with each animal repeated as evenly as possible.
A sample of what this generator can draw, spread evenly across the full list:
All 543 are real, existing species -- nothing here is invented. The region and conservation status shown for each one reflect real-world classifications.
Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the nine classes (mammals, birds, reptiles, and so on). Generate will then only draw from species in the classes you've selected.
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen. In multi-result mode, duplicates are avoided until every animal in the pool has appeared once.
It reflects real classifications as of when each entry was researched, but wildlife status changes over time -- treat it as a solid reference point, not a live feed, and double-check current figures for anything you're citing seriously.
