Generate a random fantasy kingdom government type, from monarchies to magical rule, for worldbuilding or a tabletop campaign.
A system of government is how a state allocates power: who rules, how they are chosen, and what limits they face. The classical division into rule by one, few or many still underlies the vocabulary -- monarchy, oligarchy, democracy -- though modern states mix them, and most democracies are constitutional republics or monarchies with elected legislatures. Two axes matter more than labels: how executive and legislature relate, which separates presidential from parliamentary systems, and how power splits between centre and regions, which separates federal from unitary ones. Official names are unreliable guides, since several of the least democratic states describe themselves as democratic republics.
This generator draws from 60 fantasy government types across six categories -- Monarchies, Theocracies & Divine Rule, Magical & Arcane Rule, Councils & Republics, Martial & Autocratic Rule, and Tribal & Communal Rule -- each with a short description of how it actually runs.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Worldbuilders and tabletop game masters use it to decide how an invented kingdom is actually ruled, beyond just picking "monarchy" by default. It's one of eight Kingdom generators that together make up the Fantasy Kingdom preset, which rolls a complete invented nation in one go.
Generate draws one government type at random from the full 60-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each result comes with a short description of how that government functions.

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the six categories. Generate will then only draw from government types in the categories you've selected.
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
Yes -- the Fantasy Kingdom preset stacks all eight Kingdom generators together into one window for a complete invented nation in a single click.
