Load the scope with random fragments and watch them mirror into a slowly turning rosette -- seeded, reproducible, endlessly different.
A kaleidoscope is a tube holding two or more mirrors set at an angle, with loose fragments of colored glass at the far end. The mirrors reflect the fragments and then re-reflect the reflections, multiplying one wedge of reality into a complete, symmetric rosette -- an angle of 30 degrees, for instance, yields twelve-fold symmetry. Invented and patented by Scottish physicist David Brewster in 1817, it became one of the century's great optical toys almost overnight. Turning the tube tumbles the fragments into a new arrangement, so no pattern ever quite returns -- the same reason each press of Generate here produces a rosette nobody has seen before.
Every press loads the scope with a new set of seeded fragments -- circles, petals, shards, and rays in a seeded palette -- and mirrors them into an 8- to 14-fold rosette, exactly the way the physical mirrors do. With animations on, the two layers counter-rotate slowly, so the pattern drifts like the real toy mid-turn; the seed on the card rebuilds any rosette exactly.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
It's a screen to unwind in front of -- the site's lava lamp. People keep favorites as wallpapers and meditation visuals, and the frozen frame copies out as SVG for posters, covers, or print. The mirror trick is also a neat two-minute geometry lesson: one wedge, reflected, makes the whole.
Each press draws a 32-bit seed from the site's cryptographically secure randomness and fills one wedge with four to eight seeded shapes in two layers. The wedge is then repeated around the centre with every second copy mirrored -- precisely what a two-mirror kaleidoscope does optically -- at a seeded symmetry of 8, 10, 12, or 14. When animations are enabled, the layers rotate in opposite directions at different speeds, so the composition slowly recombines without ever repeating a frame.
The two layers of fragments counter-rotate, like turning the tube of a real kaleidoscope very slowly. If you've turned animations off in Settings, it holds still instead -- every frame is a finished rosette.
