Random Slang Generator

Generate a random slang term from 101 across a century -- each with what it meant and when it peaked. Filter by decade.

About this generator

This generator draws from 101 slang terms across five eras, from the 1920s to the 2020s -- 'the bee's knees' to 'rizz'. Each entry gives the meaning and, where it's known, the origin: the advert, the film, the song, or the subculture that launched it.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Get the dialogue right in a period script or novel, decode what a teenager just said, settle an argument about when a word actually peaked, or run a generational quiz where each side explains the other's vocabulary.

How it works

Generate draws one term at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the word currently shown in single-result mode. Each draw defines the term and dates it, and the Decade filter narrows the era.

Common questions

Why does slang date so quickly?

Slang works by marking who's inside a group. Once it spreads to outsiders -- parents, adverts, news anchors -- it stops doing that job, and the group moves on. 'On fleek' went from coinage to dead in about three years.

What's the oldest slang still in use?

Plenty from the 1920s survives: 'baloney', 'big cheese', and 'gatecrasher' are all a century old. 'Cool' in its modern sense dates to 1930s-40s jazz culture and has never gone away.

Where does modern slang come from?

Overwhelmingly from African American Vernacular English, plus gaming, drag culture, and online communities -- routed through TikTok, which now compresses the adoption cycle to months.
