Random Tree Generator

Generate a random tree species, from familiar backyard favorites to rainforest giants and desert palms, for planting ideas, worldbuilding, or learning something new.

What makes a plant a tree?

Tree is a growth habit rather than a taxonomic group: a perennial plant with a single woody stem supporting a crown well above the ground. Because it describes a shape, the category has evolved independently many times, so palms and bamboos look like trees while being more closely related to grasses. A tree grows taller from its tips and wider from a thin layer beneath the bark called the cambium, which lays down the rings that record each year's growth. Height is capped near 115 metres by the physics of pulling water upward against gravity and friction, which is why the tallest known trees cluster just under that limit.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 95 real tree species across five categories -- Broadleaf & Deciduous, Conifers, Tropical Trees, Palms, and Fruit & Nut Trees -- from familiar backyard species to towering rainforest giants and record-breaking ancients.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Gardeners and landscapers use it to shortlist a species for a new planting. Writers, teachers, and game designers use it to name a forest, set a scene, or build a quick trivia round about the natural world. It's also a simple way to discover a tree you've never heard of, or settle on a tree-themed name for a project, pet, or character.

How it works

Generate draws one tree at random from the full species pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the tree alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real tree species, or made up?

All entries are real tree species, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of tree, like only Conifers?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the five categories. Generate will then only draw from trees in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same tree twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include fruit and nut trees, or just ornamentals?

Yes -- common fruit and nut trees like apple, cherry, walnut, and almond are in the pool alongside forest, tropical, and palm species.
