There are three -- Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam -- and between them they carry most of the world's long-haul traffic. Membership means your frequent-flyer miles earn and spend across every member, your status gets you into their lounges, and a single ticket can route you across several carriers with your bag checked through. What it does not mean is shared ownership: alliance members compete directly, and often on the same routes. The tighter arrangement is a joint venture, where two or three carriers pool the revenue on a particular market and effectively price it together, which is why a transatlantic fare rarely differs much between the partners. A large number of airlines belong to no alliance at all, including most low-cost carriers, because interlining bags and tickets adds cost that their whole model exists to avoid.

Each result carries the founding date, the alliance, or the thing that makes that carrier distinctive.

KLM, founded in 1919 and still operating under its original name. Avianca was founded the same year and Qantas in 1920, which makes those three the oldest still in business. All are in this list.
A selection of the famous ones, yes -- Pan Am, TWA, Swissair, Sabena, Alitalia, Varig, Braniff. They are the names most people still recognise, and leaving them out would make an aviation quiz much duller. Each is described as defunct, so nothing is misleading.
A few -- TUI as the largest charter operator, LATAM Cargo for freight -- but the list is overwhelmingly scheduled passenger carriers, since that is what people mean by a random airline.
It reflects the carriers operating as of the last update, but airlines merge, rebrand and fail constantly, so treat the newest entries as a snapshot. The founding dates and the historical facts do not go stale.
