Random Currency Generator

Generate a random world currency, with its ISO code, symbol, and live US dollar exchange rate, for economics, geography, travel, or worldbuilding.

What is a currency?

A currency is the money in general use within a country or monetary union, issued by a central bank and accepted for debts and taxes. Almost all modern currencies are fiat, meaning their value comes from confidence and legal status rather than from convertibility into gold, a link severed for the dollar in 1971. Exchange rates either float on the market or are pegged to another currency, and a peg imports the anchor country's monetary policy along with its stability. Some states abandon their own currency altogether and adopt a foreign one, which buys credibility at the cost of any independent response to a downturn.

About this generator

This generator draws from 55 real world currencies grouped by region -- Europe, the Americas, Asia & Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. Each result shows the currency's ISO code, its common symbol, and a live exchange rate against the US dollar.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Students and teachers use it for economics or geography lessons. Writers and worldbuilders use it to ground a story in a real economy, and travelers use it to brush up on the money they'll be handling. The live dollar rate also makes it a quick way to see roughly what a currency is worth.

How it works

Generate draws one currency at random from the full 55-currency pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by region narrows the pool before drawing. Exchange rates are fetched live once per visit and shown as "1 unit = X USD".

Common questions

Are the exchange rates live?

Yes -- rates are fetched from a live public exchange-rate feed each visit and shown against the US dollar. They reflect recent market data, not a real-time trading quote, so treat them as indicative.

Why isn't a rate showing?

The rate line only appears once the live feed loads. If you're offline or the feed is unavailable, the generator still works -- it just omits the dollar rate. The US Dollar itself shows no rate, since it's the reference.

Can I filter by region?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the five regions. Generate will then only draw from currencies in the regions you've selected.

Will it show me the same currency twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
