Random Biome Generator

Generate a random biome or ecosystem type, from lush rainforests to deep ocean, for worldbuilding, lesson planning, or learning something new.

What is a biome?

A biome is a large region defined by its climate and the community of life adapted to it -- tundra, temperate forest, savanna, desert. Temperature and rainfall do most of the sorting, which is why the same biome recurs at similar latitudes on continents sharing no species. Biomes sit above ecosystems and below nothing useful: one biome spans many ecosystems, and the edges between them are gradients rather than lines. Classification schemes disagree on how many exist, from five to more than twenty, depending on how finely aquatic and transitional zones are divided.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of real biomes and ecosystem types across three categories -- Terrestrial Biomes, Freshwater Biomes, and Marine Biomes -- from familiar landscapes like tropical rainforest and desert to ecosystems people rarely think about, like estuaries and mangrove forests.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Teachers and students use it to review biome types for a science class or spark a report topic. Writers and game designers use it to pick a setting for a story, a world-building region, or a habitat for a fictional creature. It's also a quick way to learn something new about ecology or settle on a nature-themed name for a project, pet, or team.

How it works

Generate draws one biome at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the biome's climate, vegetation, and a notable fact alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real biomes, or made up?

All of them are real, recognized biomes and ecosystem types, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of biome, like only Marine Biomes?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the three categories. Generate will then only draw from biomes in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same biome twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

What's the difference between a biome and an ecosystem?

A biome is a large-scale category of ecosystems sharing similar climate, vegetation, and wildlife -- like tropical rainforest or tundra -- while an individual ecosystem is a specific instance of one, like a single rainforest.
