Random Body of Water Generator

Generate a random ocean, sea, river, or lake from around the world, for a geography quiz, travel inspiration, or worldbuilding.

What are the different bodies of water?

The terms form a rough hierarchy by size and enclosure: oceans are the largest, seas are smaller and usually partly enclosed by land, gulfs and bays are coastal indentations, and straits are narrow channels connecting two larger bodies. Inland, lakes are standing water and rivers are flowing, with the distinction between a lake and a sea resting on salinity and history rather than any rule -- the Caspian Sea is technically the world's largest lake. Fjords, lagoons and estuaries are named for how they formed rather than their size. Definitions are inconsistent enough that even the number of oceans is a convention, counted as four, five or one continuous body depending on the authority.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 188 real bodies of water across four types -- Ocean, Sea, River, and Lake -- including all 5 oceans, all 76 major rivers, dozens of seas, and around 50 well-known lakes from around the world.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Students and teachers use it for a geography worksheet or trivia round. Writers and travel planners use it to pick a real-world location detail or spark a trip idea. It also works for a map-quiz icebreaker or just discovering a body of water you didn't know existed.

How it works

Generate draws one entry at random from the full 188-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by type (Ocean, Sea, River, Lake) narrows the pool to just that group before drawing.

Common questions

Are these real bodies of water?

Yes -- all 188 are real, existing oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes, not invented.

Can I filter to only rivers, or only oceans?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the four types. Generate will then only draw from bodies of water in the types you've selected.

Will it show me the same one twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include all five oceans?

Yes -- the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans are all in the pool.
