Random Desert Generator

Generate a random desert from around the world, from scorching sand seas to icy polar wastes, for worldbuilding, geography, or discovering somewhere new.

What is a desert?

A desert is defined by dryness rather than heat: less than 250 millimetres of precipitation a year, which is why Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth. Most hot deserts sit near 30 degrees latitude, where air that rose at the equator descends warm and dry, and others form in rain shadows behind mountains or along coasts cooled by upwelling currents. Life there is built around water scarcity, with plants storing it, animals working at night, and many species never drinking at all. Deserts are expanding in places through desertification, where drought combines with overgrazing and land clearance to strip soil that does not recover.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 27 real deserts across four climate categories -- Hot & Dry Deserts, Cold Winter Deserts, Coastal Deserts, and Polar Deserts -- from world-famous sandy expanses like the Sahara to lesser-known cold and coastal deserts most people have never heard of.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Writers and worldbuilders use it to name a story's setting or pick a location for an adventure. Teachers and students use it as a jumping-off point for geography lessons, and travelers and armchair explorers use it to discover a new place worth reading about. It's also a quick way to settle on a desert-themed name for a project, pet, or character.

How it works

Generate draws one desert at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the desert alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real deserts, or made up?

All 27 are real deserts, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of desert, like only the Coastal Deserts?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the four categories. Generate will then only draw from deserts in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same desert twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include famous deserts like the Sahara and Gobi?

Yes -- iconic deserts like the Sahara, Gobi, and Mojave are in the pool alongside less familiar cold, coastal, and polar deserts.
