Random Castle Generator

Generate a random castle from 110 fortresses, palaces, and ruins worldwide -- each with where it stands and what makes it worth the trip.

About this generator

This generator draws from 110 real castles, palaces, and fortresses across five kinds -- Medieval Fortresses, Fairytale & Palatial, Ruins & Romantic, Beyond Europe, and Coastal & Island -- each with its country and the detail that makes it memorable, from Malbork's brick immensity to the kitchen at Dunluce that fell into the sea mid-dinner.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Plan a trip around castles rather than cities, find a filming location or writing setting, settle which country really has the best ones, or work through a bucket list one draw at a time. Filter to Ruins & Romantic for atmosphere, or Beyond Europe to escape the usual Rhine-and-Loire circuit.

How it works

Generate draws one castle at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the castle currently shown in single-result mode. Every draw names the country and gives one line of history, and the Kind filter narrows the style.

Common questions

What is the largest castle in the world?

Malbork Castle in Poland, by land area -- a Teutonic Knights complex of red brick covering about 21 hectares. Prague Castle is often cited as largest by a different measure, which is why the argument never ends.

What's the difference between a castle and a palace?

A castle is fortified and built to be defended; a palace is a grand residence built for comfort and display. Many entries here started as one and became the other, which is why the Fairytale & Palatial group exists.

Which castles can you actually stay in?

Plenty across Europe operate as hotels, and the ruins generally don't. Ireland, Scotland, and Portugal have the deepest supply of castle hotels at ordinary hotel prices.
