Random Cooking Method Generator

Draw a random cooking technique, explained plainly, to cook something familiar in a way you haven't tried.

About this generator

This generator draws from 114 real cooking techniques, grouped by what's actually doing the work: dry oven air, hot fat, water, smoke, long slow time, or nothing but salt and patience. Each one comes with a plain explanation of what the method does and what it's good for, so an unfamiliar term is a place to start rather than a dead end.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Cooks use it to cook a familiar ingredient in an unfamiliar way -- the same chicken thigh braised, confited or blackened is three different dinners. Culinary students use it as a revision tool, and it's the technique block in the Random Meal preset.

How it works

Generate draws one technique at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filter by category to stay inside the methods your kitchen can actually do tonight.

Common questions

Are all of these things I can do at home?

Most are. A few -- tandoor cooking, pit cooking, cold smoking -- need equipment or space a home kitchen usually lacks, but they're included because they explain a lot of the food you eat.

Why are curing and pickling counted as cooking?

Because they transform food without heat. Salt, acid and fermentation all denature protein and change texture in ways heat otherwise would, which is why ceviche is 'cooked' without ever getting warm.

What's the difference between braising and stewing?

Size and submersion. Braising is a large piece partly covered in liquid; stewing is smaller pieces fully submerged. Both brown first and then go low and slow.

Can I use this to plan a full meal?

Yes -- the Random Meal preset pairs a technique with a cuisine, a protein, a sauce and a side, so you get a method and something to apply it to.
