Random Cuisine Generator

Pick a random cuisine from the world's national and regional cooking traditions, with what defines it, to decide what you're cooking or eating tonight.

About this generator

This generator draws from 132 real world cuisines across seven regions, each with a short account of what actually defines it -- its core ingredients, its techniques, and the history that shaped it. Regional traditions are listed in their own right wherever the cooking is genuinely distinct, so you'll get Sichuan and Kerala rather than "Chinese" and "Indian".

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Home cooks use it to break a rut by picking a cuisine first and building the week's cooking around it. It also works as a restaurant tiebreaker, a cooking-club prompt, and a food geography study aid -- and it's the natural first block of the Random Meal preset, which then fills in a protein, a method and a sauce to match.

How it works

Generate draws one cuisine at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. The Region filter narrows the pool before drawing, so you can stay inside Europe or inside East and Southeast Asia if you want to.

Common questions

Why is Sichuan listed separately from Chinese?

Because "Chinese" isn't an answer to "what should I cook tonight". China alone holds eight major culinary traditions that share almost no dishes, so the ones that are genuinely distinct are listed on their own terms.

Are these all national cuisines?

No -- roughly half are regional. Some are regions of a country (Tuscan, Oaxacan, Kerala), some cross borders entirely (Swahili Coast, Khaleeji, Polynesian), and a few are diaspora cuisines with their own identity, like Peranakan and Nikkei.

Can I limit it to one part of the world?

Yes -- use the filter to select one or more of the seven regions, and Generate will only draw from those.

How do I turn a cuisine into an actual meal?

Try the Random Meal preset, which stacks this generator with Protein, Cooking Method, Sauce and Side Dish so one press gives you a whole plan rather than a single word.
