Random Dog Breed Generator

Generate a random dog breed, from popular family pets to lesser-known working and hunting breeds, for picking a new pet, worldbuilding, or learning something new.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of real dog breeds across the seven standard AKC-style breed groups -- Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding -- from beloved family favorites to breeds most people have never heard of.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Future dog owners use it to discover breeds they might not have considered before researching further. Writers and game designers use it to cast a character's companion or name a fictional kennel. It's also a fun way to test your breed knowledge, settle a debate about which group a dog belongs to, or just learn something new about the dog world.

How it works

Generate draws one dog breed at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by group narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the breed alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real dog breeds, or made up?

All of them are real, recognized dog breeds, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of dog, like only the Herding Group?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the seven breed groups. Generate will then only draw from breeds in the groups you've selected.

Will it show me the same breed twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

How are the breed groups decided?

The groupings follow the standard AKC-style classification system, which sorts breeds by the work they were originally bred to do -- herding, hunting, guarding, and so on.
