Random Fantasy Alignment Generator

Generate a random tabletop RPG alignment from the classic Lawful-Chaotic, Good-Evil grid, for a new or existing character.

What is alignment?

Alignment is a Dungeons and Dragons device placing a character on two axes -- lawful to chaotic, and good to evil -- producing the familiar nine boxes. It began in the 1970s as a faction mechanic borrowed from fantasy fiction, where law and chaos were cosmic sides rather than personality traits, and only later drifted into being read as a moral personality test. It has been steadily de-emphasised in the game itself, with recent editions dropping mechanical consequences and treating it as a descriptive note at most. It survives mainly as an internet format for sorting anything into nine boxes, which is a fair indication of what it was always best at.

About this generator

This generator draws from the classic 9-alignment grid used across tabletop RPGs -- three moral outlooks (Good, Neutral, Evil) each crossed with an ethical stance, from Lawful Good to Chaotic Evil.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Tabletop RPG players use it to settle on an alignment for a new character, or to add a wrinkle to an existing one. It's one of nine Fantasy generators that together make up the D&D Character preset, which rolls a complete character in one go.

How it works

Generate draws one alignment at random from the full 9-entry grid using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by moral outlook (Good, Neutral, Evil) narrows the pool before drawing.

Common questions

Is this the same 9-alignment grid from tabletop RPGs?

Yes -- it's the familiar 3x3 grid crossing Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic with Good/Neutral/Evil.

Can I filter by moral outlook, like only Good alignments?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of Good, Neutral, or Evil. Generate will then only draw from alignments matching what you've selected.

Will it show me the same alignment twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Is there a way to roll a whole character at once, not just an alignment?

Yes -- the D&D Character preset stacks all nine Fantasy generators together into one window for a complete character in a single click.
