Generate a random fantasy character race, from tabletop RPG staples to stranger options, for your next character or NPC.
The standard fantasy lineup of elves, dwarves, orcs and halflings descends almost entirely from Tolkien, who drew on Norse and Old English sources but reshaped them heavily -- the elves of Norse myth bear little resemblance to his. Dungeons and Dragons codified them into game mechanics in the 1970s, attaching numerical bonuses to each, and that framing spread through video games and fiction until it read as generic. Modern designers have moved away from it, since fixed mental attributes per race carried assumptions that do not survive examination, and most current systems attach traits to culture or upbringing instead. The word itself is being retired in favour of species or ancestry for the same reason.
This generator draws from 65 tabletop RPG character races across three rarity tiers -- Common, Uncommon, and Exotic -- from staples like humans and elves to stranger options for a less conventional party.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Tabletop RPG players use it to pick a race for a new character, especially when starting a campaign and undecided. It's one of nine Fantasy generators that together make up the D&D Character preset, which rolls a complete character (race, class, alignment, name, background, personality trait, flaw, backstory hook, and starting weapon) in one go.
Generate draws one race at random from the full 65-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by rarity tier narrows the pool before drawing, so you can stick to Common options or specifically hunt for something Exotic.
A sample of what this generator can draw, spread evenly across the full list:
Common covers the staple races most settings include, Uncommon covers less typical but still familiar options, and Exotic covers races built for a more unusual party.
Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the three tiers. Generate will then only draw from races in the tiers you've selected.
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
Yes -- the D&D Character preset stacks all nine Fantasy generators together into one window for a complete character in a single click.
