Generate a random galaxy, from our own Local Group neighbors to distant spirals, ellipticals, and colliding pairs, for astronomy inspiration, worldbuilding, or learning something new.
A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of stars, gas, dust and dark matter, ranging from dwarfs of a few thousand stars to giants holding a hundred trillion. They sort into spirals with rotating disc-shaped arms, ellipticals of older stars with little cold gas left to form new ones, and irregulars usually distorted by a past collision. The Milky Way is a barred spiral roughly 100,000 light years across, and the Andromeda Galaxy is closing on it for a merger in about 4.5 billion years. Estimates put the observable universe at somewhere between 200 billion and 2 trillion galaxies, depending on how faint a smudge still counts.
This generator draws from a curated list of real, named galaxies across five categories -- Spiral Galaxies, Elliptical Galaxies, Irregular Galaxies, Local Group, and Dwarf Galaxies -- from the Milky Way's own neighbors to distant colliding pairs and record-holding giants.
Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.
Astronomy fans and educators use it to spark a topic for a lesson, quiz, or stargazing session. Writers and game designers use it to name a starship, a setting, or a sci-fi faction's home system. It's also a quick way to learn something new about the universe, pick a space-themed name for a project or pet, or settle a friendly debate about which galaxy is the strangest.
Generate draws one galaxy at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the galaxy alongside its name.

Every galaxy here is real, including its description -- nothing has been invented.
Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the five categories. Generate will then only draw from galaxies in the categories you've selected.
Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
Yes -- both are in the pool under Local Group, alongside their smaller satellite galaxies and neighbors.
