Random Nebula Generator

Generate a random nebula, from famous stellar nurseries to faint dark dust clouds, for stargazing inspiration, worldbuilding, or learning something new.

What is a nebula?

A nebula is an interstellar cloud of gas and dust, mostly hydrogen, typically spanning light years. Emission nebulae glow because nearby hot stars ionise their gas, reflection nebulae only scatter starlight, and dark nebulae are dense enough to block whatever lies behind them. Some are stellar nurseries where gravity is collapsing the cloud into new stars; planetary nebulae are the reverse, the shed outer layers of a dying star, named before anyone knew they had nothing to do with planets. Photographs overstate their colour, since almost all are far too faint for the eye to read as anything but grey.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of real, named nebulae across five categories -- Emission Nebulae, Reflection Nebulae, Planetary Nebulae, Supernova Remnants, and Dark Nebulae -- from icons like the Orion Nebula and the Crab Nebula to lesser-known deep-sky objects.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Astronomy enthusiasts and stargazers use it to pick a new target for a telescope session or astrophotography shoot. Writers and game designers use it to name a starship, a sector of space, or a setting in science fiction. It's also a quick way to learn something new about the night sky, or to land on a nebula-themed name for a project, pet, or character.

How it works

Generate draws one nebula at random from the full pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the nebula alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real nebulae, or made up?

Every nebula in the pool is real, including its description -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of nebula, like only Planetary Nebulae?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the five categories. Generate will then only draw from nebulae in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same nebula twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

What's the difference between the categories?

Emission Nebulae are glowing star-forming gas clouds, Reflection Nebulae are dust clouds that shine by scattering starlight, Planetary Nebulae are shells cast off by dying Sun-like stars, Supernova Remnants are the wreckage of exploded massive stars, and Dark Nebulae are dense dust clouds that block light rather than emit it.
