Random Holiday Generator

Generate a random holiday from around the world, with its date and where it's celebrated, for lessons, planning, or discovering a new festival.

What is a public holiday?

A public holiday is a day set aside by law on which most work stops, and the reasons cluster into religious observance, national commemoration, and seasonal markers inherited from far older agricultural calendars. Dates split into fixed ones that fall on the same date each year and movable ones tied to lunar or lunisolar reckoning, which is why Easter, Diwali and Eid shift against the Gregorian calendar. Many countries add substitute days when a holiday lands on a weekend, and several deliberately fix holidays to Mondays for long weekends. The number varies widely, from around eight a year in England to more than twenty in some countries.

About this generator

This generator draws from 60 well-known holidays and observances from around the world, grouped into four types -- Religious, National & Patriotic, Cultural & Seasonal, and Global & Modern. Each result shows a rough date, where it's marked, and a short description.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Teachers use it for lessons on world cultures and calendars. Writers use it to place a story around a real celebration, and planners use it to discover holidays worth marking. It's also a fun way to learn about a festival from another part of the world.

How it works

Generate draws one holiday at random from the full 60-holiday pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by type narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result shows a date, region, and short description.

Common questions

Are these real holidays?

Yes -- all 60 are real, widely observed holidays and celebrations from around the world.

Why do some dates say the date varies?

Many holidays follow lunar or religious calendars, so their Gregorian date shifts each year -- those are labeled accordingly rather than pinned to a fixed day.

Can I filter by type?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the four types. Generate will then only draw from holidays in the types you've selected.

Will it show me the same holiday twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.
