Random Language Generator

Generate a random language from around the world, living or ancient, with where it's spoken and how many people still speak it.

What is a language?

A language is a structured system of communication with its own vocabulary and grammar, and roughly 7,000 are currently spoken. The boundary between a language and a dialect is political as much as linguistic, since mutual intelligibility is a spectrum -- the standard quip is that a language is a dialect with an army and a navy. Languages are grouped into families by descent from a common ancestor, so English, Hindi and Persian all trace to Proto-Indo-European despite little surface resemblance. Around 40% are endangered, with one estimate putting the loss at a language every two weeks as the last fluent speakers die.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated sample of 169 languages spanning every inhabited continent, including classical and ancient ones, across eight regions -- European, Middle Eastern & North African, South & Central Asian, East & Southeast Asian, Sub-Saharan African, Pacific & Australian, Indigenous Americas, and Ancient & Classical. Each result shows roughly where it's spoken and how many people still speak it.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Students and teachers use it for a linguistics or geography lesson. Writers and worldbuilders use it to pick a real-world language basis for a fictional one, and it's also a way to discover a language, living or ancient, you'd never have come across otherwise.

How it works

Generate draws one language at random from the full 169-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by region narrows the pool before drawing.

Common questions

Does this cover every language in the world?

No -- it's a broad, curated sample of 169 languages spanning every inhabited continent, not an exhaustive list of every language spoken today.

Can I filter by region?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the eight regions. Generate will then only draw from languages in the regions you've selected.

Will it show me the same language twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include extinct or ancient languages?

Yes -- Ancient & Classical is one of the eight regions, alongside living, modern languages.
