Random Martial Art Generator

Generate a random martial art from 111 worldwide -- each with where it came from and what actually happens in a class.

About this generator

This generator draws from 111 martial arts across five types -- Striking, Grappling, Weapons, Hybrid & Modern, and Traditional & Internal. Each result names the country and era it came from and describes what training in it is really like, from Muay Thai's clinch work to oil wrestling at a Turkish festival that has run annually since 1346.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Pick a discipline to try, settle an argument about which art beats which, research a fight scene or a character's background, or simply learn how many traditions exist beyond the six or seven that reach television. The Weapons and Traditional filters turn up the ones nobody has heard of.

How it works

Generate draws one martial art at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the art currently shown in single-result mode. Each result carries its origin and what training involves, and the Type filter narrows from striking to internal arts.

Common questions

What is the best martial art for self-defence?

Most instructors would say a striking art plus a grappling art -- typically boxing or Muay Thai with wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu -- plus the awareness training that systems like Krav Maga emphasise. No single art covers every range.

What is the oldest martial art?

Kalaripayattu from Kerala is often given the title, with wrestling depicted in Egyptian and Mesopotamian art thousands of years earlier. Pankration is the oldest with a documented competitive ruleset, from 648 BC.

Which martial art is easiest to start as an adult?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, and boxing all have well-developed beginner pathways and plenty of adults starting from nothing. Tai chi and aikido are the gentlest entry points physically.
