Random Sports Team Generator

Generate a random professional sports team from 250 clubs across ten leagues -- the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and Europe's big five football leagues.

Why do some leagues have fixed teams and others don't?

Because North American and European sport are built on opposite principles. The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL are closed franchise systems: a team's place in the league is a property right, bought and sold, and it cannot be lost by finishing last. That is why the NFL has exactly 32 teams and will keep having 32 until the owners vote to add one, and why a franchise that wants a better stadium deal moves city rather than dropping a division. European football runs on promotion and relegation instead. Finish in the bottom three of the Premier League and you are in the Championship next season, however long your history; win the Championship and you are up. Roughly a fifth of every European top flight changes each May, which is why a list of "the twenty Premier League clubs" is out of date within a year of being written, and a list of the 32 NFL franchises is not.

About this generator

This generator draws from 250 professional clubs across ten leagues -- the four major North American ones, Europe's big five football leagues, and MLS. The North American sections are complete, because those leagues are closed. The football sections list each league's established clubs rather than one season's table, since promotion and relegation would make a snapshot wrong within a year.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Picking a team to support at random, choosing sides for a video game or a fantasy draft, sports quizzes and pub trivia, deciding who to back in a tournament sweepstake, and settling arguments about which team someone has to follow for a season.

How it works

Generate draws one club at random from 250 using cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the one already showing. Filter to one league -- or several -- and the draw comes only from those. Each result carries a line on the club's history, its name, or the thing it is best known for.

Common questions

Which leagues are covered?

The NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL in full, plus the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and MLS. Between them that is the great majority of what people mean by professional team sport in Europe and North America.

Are all the teams from the current season?

The four North American leagues are complete and current -- they are closed systems, so the list only changes when the league adds a franchise. The European football entries are each league's established clubs rather than the current table, because promotion and relegation change roughly a fifth of every top flight each year.

Can I use it to pick a team to support?

That is one of the more popular reasons people use it. Filter to the league you can actually watch, press Generate once, and commit. Turning off the Recent results setting first stops you seeing what you might have got instead.

Can I draw several teams at once?

Yes -- the amount goes up to 100 with an option to forbid duplicates, which makes it a quick way to seed a bracket, split a fantasy draft order, or deal out teams for a video-game tournament.
