Random Playground Game Generator

Generate a random playground game from 109 -- each with how many players it needs, what kit it takes, and how it works.

About this generator

This generator draws from 109 children's games across five types -- Chasing & Tag, Hiding & Seeking, Ball & Playground Equipment, Skipping, Clapping & Hand Games, and Circle, Quiet & Party. Each result states the number of players, any equipment required, and the rules in a sentence, so an adult can start the game straight from the description.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Run a birthday party, fill the last fifteen minutes of a lesson, entertain a group at a campsite, or remember the name of the game you played at school and can no longer describe. The Circle, Quiet & Party filter is the one to press indoors, or when the group needs to come down rather than up.

How it works

Generate draws one game at random using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, never repeating the game currently shown in single-result mode. Each result names the player count and the kit needed, and the Type filter narrows to running games, ball games, or quiet ones.

Common questions

What playground games need no equipment?

Most of them. Everything in Chasing & Tag and nearly all of Hiding & Seeking needs nothing but space and people, which is why those games have survived for centuries.

What games work for a large group of children?

Capture the Flag, British Bulldog, Sharks and Minnows, and Blob Tag all improve with numbers. Anything above twenty players wants a game with teams rather than a single tagger.

Why are some of these games banned at schools?

British Bulldog and Red Rover involve deliberate collisions, and many schools stopped them after injuries. The gentler variants -- Sharks and Minnows, Stuck in the Mud -- exist largely as replacements.
