About this generator

This generator draws from 240 original character backstory premises across four themes -- Vengeance, Mystery, Redemption, and Ambition -- each a sentence-length hook that gives a character a reason to be out adventuring in the first place.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

Tabletop RPG players and writers use it when a character needs a "why" beyond their race and class -- a concrete origin premise to build the rest of the backstory around. It's one of nine Fantasy generators that together make up the D&D Character preset, which rolls a complete character in one go.

How it works

Generate draws one backstory hook at random from the full 240-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by theme (Vengeance, Mystery, Redemption, Ambition) narrows the pool before drawing.

Common questions

Are these full backstories, or just a starting premise?

A starting premise -- each hook is a sentence-length origin idea meant to be built out further, not a complete backstory.

Can I filter by theme, like only Redemption?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the four themes. Generate will then only draw from hooks in the themes you've selected.

Will it show me the same hook twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Is there a way to roll a whole character at once, not just a backstory hook?
