Random Periodic Element Generator

Generate a random chemical element from the periodic table, with its symbol and atomic number, for chemistry homework, trivia night, or brushing up on the table you half-remember from school.

What is a chemical element?

A chemical element is a substance whose atoms all share the same proton count, and that number -- the atomic number -- is what makes it that element. 118 are confirmed: 94 occur naturally on Earth, the rest exist only as laboratory products, sometimes a few atoms at a time. Because no chemical means breaks them into anything simpler, elements are what every other substance is assembled from. The periodic table orders them by atomic number so that columns share behaviour, which is why the noble gases are uniformly inert and the alkali metals violently the opposite.

About this generator

This generator draws from all 118 confirmed elements on the periodic table, across ten categories -- Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Post-Transition Metals, Metalloids, Nonmetals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Lanthanides, and Actinides -- each shown with its chemical symbol and atomic number.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Students use it to drill element recall for a chemistry class or quiz. Teachers use it to pull a random element for a worksheet or bell-ringer question. It also works as a quick trivia-night stumper or a way to rediscover an element you last thought about in high school.

How it works

Generate draws one element at random from the full 118-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool to just that group before drawing.

Common questions

Does this cover the entire periodic table?

Yes -- all 118 currently confirmed elements are included, from hydrogen to oganesson.

Can I filter by element type, like only noble gases or only metals?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the ten categories. Generate will then only draw from elements in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same element twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it show the element's symbol and atomic number?

Yes -- both are shown alongside the element's name on every result.
