Random Gemstone Generator

Generate a random gemstone or mineral, from birthstones to rare collector's finds, for jewelry inspiration, worldbuilding, or learning something new.

What makes a stone a gemstone?

A gemstone is a mineral or, occasionally, an organic material like amber or pearl, valued for beauty and durable enough to be cut and worn. Three qualities decide that: colour, rarity, and hardness measured on the Mohs scale, where diamond sits at 10 and anything below about 7 will scratch in ordinary wear. Trace impurities do most of the colouring, and often the same mineral yields different gems -- corundum is ruby when chromium tints it red and sapphire in every other colour. The traditional split into precious and semi-precious stones is a marketing convention from the 1800s, not a gemmological one.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 94 real gemstones and minerals across nine categories -- Precious Stones, Quartz Family, Beryl Family, Garnet Family, Feldspar Family, Corundum Varieties, Organic Gems, Ornamental & Other, and Rare & Precious -- from everyday birthstones to gems most people have never heard of.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Jewelry designers and hobbyist beaders use it to spark an idea for a new piece. Writers and game designers use it to name a magic item, a treasure haul, or a fantasy setting's local export. It's also a quick way to learn something new about mineralogy, pick a birthstone alternative, or settle on a gem-themed name for a project, pet, or character.

How it works

Generate draws one gemstone at random from the full 94-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of the stone alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real gemstones, or made up?

All 94 are real gems and minerals, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by type of gemstone, like only the Quartz Family?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the nine categories. Generate will then only draw from gems in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same gemstone twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include birthstones?

Yes -- common birthstones like amethyst, garnet, and sapphire are in the pool alongside rarer and more obscure gems and minerals.
