Random Geologic Period Generator

Generate a random slice of Earth's deep history, from ancient eons to familiar epochs, for a science lesson, a worldbuilding prompt, or a quick trivia refresher.

What is a geologic period?

A geologic period is one division of the geologic time scale, the calendar geologists use to order Earth's 4.5-billion-year history. The scale nests: eons contain eras, eras contain periods such as the Cambrian and the Jurassic, and periods contain epochs. Boundaries fall where the rock record changes sharply, usually at a mass extinction or a marked shift in fossil assemblages, and each is formally pinned to a specific outcrop. The names come from where the rocks were first described -- Devonian from Devon, Jurassic from the Jura mountains -- not from what happened during them.

About this generator

This generator draws from a curated list of 22 real spans of geologic time across three categories -- Precambrian, Paleozoic Era, and Mesozoic & Cenozoic -- from Earth's earliest eons to the epoch we live in today.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

What people use it for

Teachers and students use it to review the geologic time scale or quiz themselves on what came before what. Writers, worldbuilders, and game designers use it to set a prehistoric scene or name an era for a fictional world. It's also a quick way to spark curiosity about deep time, pick an era-themed name for a project or pet, or settle a trivia debate about when the dinosaurs actually lived.

How it works

Generate draws one geologic period, epoch, or eon at random from the full 22-entry pool using the site's cryptographically secure randomness, guaranteed not to repeat whatever result is currently showing in single-result mode. Filtering by category narrows the pool before drawing, and each single result comes with a short description of that span of time alongside its name.

Common questions

Are these real geologic periods, or made up?

All 22 are real spans of geologic time, including their descriptions -- nothing here is invented.

Can I filter by era, like only the Paleozoic?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the three categories. Generate will then only draw from spans of time in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same period twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it include epochs as well as full periods and eons?

Yes -- alongside standard periods like the Jurassic and Cretaceous, it includes well-known epochs such as the Eocene, Miocene, Pleistocene, and Holocene, plus the earlier Precambrian eons.
