Body fossils preserve the organism itself -- bone, shell, wood -- usually after minerals replaced the original material; trace fossils preserve behaviour instead, as footprints, burrows or droppings. Preservation needs rapid burial in sediment before decay or scavengers intervene, which is why marine animals fossilise far more readily than forest ones. The result is a heavily filtered record: hard parts are overrepresented, soft-bodied life is almost absent, and some environments leave nothing at all.
