What is a spirit?

A spirit is an alcoholic drink made by distilling a fermented base, concentrating alcohol well beyond the roughly 15% that fermentation alone can reach. What separates the categories is the base and the rules: whisky from grain, brandy from fruit, rum from sugarcane, tequila from blue agave, and gin from a neutral spirit flavoured with juniper. Ageing in wood does most of the rest, adding colour, vanillin and tannin, which is why an unaged and a barrel-aged spirit from the same still differ so much. Many categories carry legal geographic protection, so Cognac, Scotch and tequila can only be made in defined regions.

This generator draws from a curated list of 95 real spirits and liqueurs across eight categories -- Whiskey & Bourbon, Vodka, Gin, Rum, Tequila & Mezcal, Brandy & Cognac, Liqueurs & Amari, and Aperitifs & Fortified Wines.

Every result here is drawn using crypto.getRandomValues() -- the Web Crypto API's cryptographically secure randomness -- instead of Math.random(), so it's genuinely unpredictable, not just statistically random. Learn more.

Are these real spirits?

Yes -- all 95 are real spirits and liqueurs, not invented.

Can I filter by type, like only whiskey or only gin?

Yes -- use the filter button to pick one or more of the eight categories. Generate will then only draw from spirits in the categories you've selected.

Will it show me the same spirit twice in a row?

Not in single-result mode -- each new roll is guaranteed to differ from the one currently on screen.

Does it cover liqueurs, or just base spirits?
